Setting the Direction for
Special Education in Alberta
Alberta Education is embarking on a project to propose a more effective direction for special education in Alberta, one which ensures continuous, systemic improvement. Minister Hancock officially launched the Setting the Direction for Special Education in Alberta project at the May 8-9 CASS/Alberta Education Special Education Symposium in Red Deer. The results of the project will be implemented in September 2010.
The first three phases of the project include broad-based consultation with Albertans. As a department, our commitment is to ensure that all Albertans have an opportunity to participate in this project and be heard. The end result will be new policy, accountability measures, and funding model.
The consultation process of the first phase began at the symposium, with participants working on framing the direction, starting with vision and principles. Additional first-phase consultations with a broad segment of the public are planned in various communities throughout the province between now and October 2008.
